先日、信州大学教育学部心理支援教育コースのミレル・ロビンさんに授業に来ていただき、チェコの食文化についてお話をしていただきました。
まず導入は19世紀のチェコ出身の将軍、ラデツキーの肖像画から…？！なんと、かの有名なシュニッツェル（カツレツ）を発明した人なんだそうです！（ラデツキー行進曲のラデツキーでもあります。）
ヨーロッパはいくつもの国に分かれていますが、歴史的に様々な近隣文化が混じり合ってきました。チェコの食と文化は、ドイツ、オーストリア、イタリア、そしてソビエトの社会主義などにも影響を受けて育まれてきたようです。
ナショナルディッシュともいえるSvíčková na smetaně（スヴィーチュコヴァー・ナ・スメタネ）とVepřo
Knedlo Zelo（ヴェプロ・クネドロ・ゼロ）。肉を煮込んだものと、蒸しパン（bread dumpling）、そして濃厚な野菜のソースが付け合わせになっています。
そして、様々な種類のパンとビール！チェコは、1人あたりビール消費量がもっとも多い国なんだそうです。パブで人々が集まった時に遊ぶ、チェコ独自のカードゲームも興味深かったです。そして、チェコのパンを作るには特別な小麦粉が必要とのことで、日本ではなかなか手に入らないようです。（学生たちは「チェコのパンを再現してみたい！」と意欲的でした。）
クリスマスには、鯉とポテトサラダを食べるそうです。鯉の料理があるとは、長野との共通点ですね！
食を学ぶことで、その国の歴史や文化、社会をより深く知ることができると実感したお話でした。個人的には、色々な種類の蒸しパンを食べてみたいです。甘い蒸しパンがメインディッシュになることもあるんだそうです。
ロビンさんのユーモアと示唆に富むお話で、あっという間に時間が過ぎました。貴重なお話をどうもありがとうございました！

We welcomed Robin Müller from the Faculty
of Education, Psychology and Education Course at Shinshu University to our
class, where he gave us a talk on Czech food culture.
To our surprise, the session began with a
portrait of General Radetzky, a 19th-century figure born in what is now the
Czech Republic. We learned that he is said to have invented the famous
schnitzel! (He is also the Radetzky of the “Radetzky March.”)
Europe is divided into many nations, yet
its cultures have long been intertwined. Czech cuisine and culture have
developed under the influence of neighboring regions such as Germany, Austria,
Italy, and also the socialist period under the Soviet Union.
He introduced two dishes considered
national classics: Svíčková na smetaně and Vepřo Knedlo Zelo. These meals
typically consist of simmered meat, bread dumplings, and a rich
vegetable-based sauce.
And then, of course—bread and beer! The
Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita in the world. We
also learned about Czech card games traditionally played when people gather at
pubs. Interestingly, Czech bread requires a particular type of flour that is
difficult to find in Japan. (Our students became very eager to try recreating
Czech bread!)
At Christmas, people in the Czech Republic
eat carp and potato salad. The fact that carp dishes are part of their
tradition reminded us of a similarity with Nagano!
The session reminded us how learning about
food can deepen our understanding of a country’s history, culture, and society.
Personally, I would love to try the many different kinds of bread dumplings. I
was surprised to learn that sweet bread dumplings can even be served as a main
dish!
The session was filled with Robin’s humor
and insightful stories, and the time passed so fast! Thank you so much for sharing such a valuable and inspiring talk with us!
